Whitman College is a private, co-ed, residential, non-sectarian, undergraduate liberal arts college located in Walla Walla, which is the largest city in Walla Walla county, also serving as its county seat, its populaton being estimated at a number of over 31 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census.
The college was established in December, 1859, by a territorial legislative charter, and first started as a seminary, becoming a four year degree granting institution, in 1883.
Whitman presently offers its students dozens of majors and minors in the liberal arts and sciences. `Through the study of humanities, arts, and social and natural sciences, Whitman's students develop capacities to analyze, interpret, criticize, communicate, and engage.`
Whitman's athetic teams compete in the NCAA's Northwest Conference (Division III). Their distinctive colors are blue and maize and their current mascot is named the `Fighting Missionary`.
